Take part in lung cancer screening research

What is the research study about?

The ‘Ready to Screen’ research study aims to better understand if people think they will take part in the lung cancer screening program.

It also aims to understand if there are reasons why some people may not want to or not be able to have lung cancer screening.

Knowing this information will help improve the lung cancer screening program and help us remove barriers so that all eligible Australians can take part in screening.

What would I have to do?

You will be asked to complete a brief survey. It will take 10-15 minutes. You can do the survey online or by telephone. We will ask you about how you found out about the lung cancer screening program, if you think you will take part in screening, and reasons why you might not want to take part or why screening may be difficult for you. You will not have a low dose CT scan as part of this study.

Who can take part in the research?

To take part in the survey you need to be aged between 50-70 years after the 1 July 2025. You also need to be currently smoking or have a history of smoking for more than 10 years, even if you’ve quit. If you need assistance to participate, you can have a carer or support person to assist you to complete the survey.

How will my answers help?

By participating in this research, you will help us test what types of information and resources are helpful to engage people in lung cancer screening.

Is there any benefit to me?

If you choose to give us permission to give your GP some information about your eligibility for screening, your GP practice will be able to contact you when the National Lung Cancer Screening Program starts in July 2025. This means that if your GP finds that you are eligible, you will be able to get screened for lung cancer as soon as the screening program starts, if that is what you wish to do.

Can I do my survey on the phone?

If you would rather participate over the phone, you can call the research team to arrange a phone interview on 0459 867 617 or you can request a call back by submitting an enquiry here
